Augustana

Commissioned for Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C., this icon commemorates the Augsburg Confession of 1530, the primary confession of faith of the Lutheran Church. In the center, Martin Luther points to the atoning blood of Christ on the cross as central to the faith. Philip Melanchthon holds the text of the Confession, open to the passage, “And their sins are forgiven for Christ’s sake.” They are surrounded by holy Lutheran women and men, including Archbishop Laurentius Petri, Johann Sebastian Bach, Henry Muhlenberg, and Elisabeth Fedde. At the bottom is an iconographic depiction of the medieval city of Augsburg.
